New Horizons Trauma and Healing Counseling, Founder and Owner
Julie Schalk is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Michigan and the founder and owner of New Horizons Trauma and Healing Counseling. She earned her master’s degree from Grand Rapids Theological Seminary and completed her undergraduate degree in Youth Ministry at Kuyper College.

Julie began New Horizons after serving as a clinical therapist at Centennial Park Counseling and previously at Roots Therapeutic Specialty Services, where she developed and strengthened her clinical skillset. She is a member of the American Counseling Association.

Julie is passionate about working with clients age 8 and older, with particular experience supporting pre-teens and teens in both inner-city and suburban settings. She also enjoys working with adults. Her therapeutic approach most often integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR; trained), Sand Tray Therapy, and Play Therapy. Julie is committed to ongoing professional growth and strives to serve each client with care, competence, and integrity.

Julie’s Christian faith is personally meaningful to her and informs her worldview. She believes that emotional, physical, and spiritual dimensions are all important aspects of healing. Spiritual integration in counseling is always client-directed and included only at the client’s request and with explicit permission. She is committed to honoring each client’s autonomy, beliefs, and values.

A verse that has been meaningful to Julie in her counseling vocation is
2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (NIV):

“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”
